Team Razer’s LGD Wins $2.2 Million at $18.4 Million eSports Tournament

TEAM RAZER’S LGD WINS $2.2 MILLION AT $18.4 MILLION ESPORTS TOURNAMENT

Razer’s Dota 2 team earned millions of record-setting purse

SEATTLE (The International 2015) – Razer™, a world leader in connected devices and software for gamers and a pioneering supporter of competitive gaming, and LGD, one of the world’s most recognized eSports brands, today celebrated the Razer-sponsored organization’s Dota 2 third-place finish at The International 2015. The team claimed $2.2 million from the largest prize pool ever amassed for an eSports tournament.

With a record $18.4 million prize purse crowdsourced in large part through Dota 2’s in-game marketplace, The International now stands as the most prestigious eSports event to-date. Matches were held in front of a sold-out live audience at Seattle’s KeyArena, former home of the NBA SuperSonics. Millions more fans watched the event unfold online.

LGD began play qualified as an upper bracket team after finishing first in its group stage. The team beat Empire, Virtus Pro and Vici Gaming before advancing to the top three.

“The attention The International attracted this year reminds me of watching the (2014 Men’s) World Cup last year,” says Lu “Maybe” Yao, who just finished competing in his first Dota 2 The International. “In terms of fan appreciation and sponsorship participation, there hasn’t been an event that I’ve been a part of that can approach this. It was surreal.”

LGD is part of Team Razer. The company sponsors 27 professional eSports teams and 260 players in 31 countries worldwide. In 2014 alone, Razer’s pro gamers earned more than $4 million in prize money with 280 podium placements.

“LGD showed again what unerring focus, endurance, skill and teamwork mean at the highest level of competitive gaming,” says Razer co-founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan. “This year’s Dota 2 championship reminds us why we started supporting eSports events and players all those years ago, and LGD stands as a great example of what the sport and spirit of gaming is all about.”

Razer invented the gaming peripheral category in 1998 with the advent of the first gaming-grade mouse and became the first brand to sponsor a professional gamer in 2000 when it signed legendary pro gamer Fatal1ty. The company also became the first major financial backer of any pro gaming event that same year with a $100,000 sponsorship for the Cyber Athlete Professional League (CPL).
